The best method of effective self defense is prevention. Using your head to avoid the danger by being aware of your surroundings, keeping a large dog or a friend with you when you visit secluded places or poorly lit places, and carrying yourself confidently are some ways to avoid being attacked. In the case that you are attacked, though, it is not a good idea to only rely on your wit, your brute strength or your martial arts skills. In this case, it would be much better to be trained in effective self defense methods of fighting back. This article will discuss what effective self defense is, why you need it, and how you learn it.
What is Effective Self Defense?
The most effective defensive tactic is automatic, and you don't have to think about it, because chances are, when you are attacked, especially if you don't have any self defense training, your response will be to get away, "flight," instead of stay, "fight." This so called "fight or flight" reaction occurs every time a person is in danger, but for most people the common reaction is flight, and if it is fight, without proper self defense training, you may find yourself out muscled or just taken off guard, and hand to hand combat or martial arts will not work in this situation.
The best self defense training is training based on your natural reflexes. This type of effective self defense training is based on your body's reflexes and natural reactions. You are trained to use your strengths such as your large muscle groups, correct bone alignment and gross motor movements to create power and overthrow your opponent. With this type of training, even a small woman can harness enough power to take on an adult male.
You are also trained to do what your body already wants to do in the case of an attack. This makes the moves easy to learn, and practice will help keep the moves at the front of your mind so that you can use them effectively when needed.
Why Do You Need Effective Self Defense?
You may be thinking, I am tough, I know how to fight, and you may have even taken martial arts classes. But the fact is, years of training at martial arts cannot prepare you for an unexpected attack the way good self defense classes can, in a much shorter period of time. It takes a lot of time and practice to be able to master martial arts in such a way that you could successfully fight off an attacker that is bigger and stronger than you.
You should also keep in mind, that the playing field is not always going to be level when you are facing an attacker. Your attacker could just be an average guy, or he could have fight training or even a weapon. In these cases you cannot rely on previous fight experience or sheer strength, you have to know the best self defense tactics that will catch the attacker off guard with your ability to protect yourself to successfully end the fight.
How Do You Use Effective Self Defense?
The best techniques are based around striking one or more of the over 170 sensitive targets on the body that cause an involuntary and uncontrollable response in the attacker. Your is should be designed to allow you to focus on a few of the sensitive areas of the body so that when the opportunity presents, you can choose the one that is the easiest to hit. What makes this so effective is that you do not have to be extremely strong to take down a larger attacker with these self defense techniques, you only have to have a decent aim.
When you know the best self defense techniques and you practice them from time to time to keep the training fresh in your mind, you will be adequately prepared to handle an attacker.
